December 15–The Gift Of Miracles
I glanced out the window early yesterday morning and was surprised to see snow falling. While I’m not a fan of shoveling, I couldn’t help feeling a sense of awe watching the first snow of the season cover the ground in white snowflakes. I wanted to capture the scene before little critters left tracks upon it, so I went quickly to my spare bedroom, grabbed a camera and stepped outside without a coat. The touch of the soft flakes on my skin reminded me of a quote by Albert Einstein that is printed on a beautiful piece of glass sitting on a shelf in my curio closet, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” That simple act set me on a quest to find “little miracles” in my day.
The first miracle I saw as I stepped back into the kitchen was the poinsettia plant from last year sitting on the floor. The fact that it managed to survive my “brown thumb” was a miracle in itself, but seeing that some of its leaves were turning red exactly at this holiday season without orchestration from any thing or any one was a greater miracle.
When Was The Last Time You Thought of Yourself As a Miracle?
Going through my day brought more miracles. Watching my grandson playing reminded me of a time, only two short years ago, when he was tiny and helpless and how he had grown so quickly into a happy toddler. We are all miracles.
Later in the day I visited Dustin the 26-year-old quadriplegic I have been working with for over a year. Although he has been trapped in a body for four years with no speech and only the ability to move his head and his hand slightly, we communicate through the power of Reiki and hypnosis. Dustin sees everything as a miracle. The fact that he can now control his lips and is beginning to learn to make sound again; his ability to taste chocolate pudding and applesauce for the first time since his car accident—these are his miracles and each week he shares them with me.
My day became an affirmation of miracles…
They filled me with joy and wonder. Have you been so busy looking for big miracles that you’ve completely missed the small ones happening all around you? Take a few minutes this holiday season and wrap your dreams in the gift of miracles!
